COM2115 – AV Production 1

AV Production 1 continues learning from the Audio/Video module in Grade 10. Audio/Video is a prerequisite for this module. In AV Production 1, students expand on basic audio and video production techniques with an emphasis on following a production plan, capturing content to edit and ensuring that continuity is maintained.

Assessment breakdown:

#1. Theory = 20%
#2. Practice = 40%
#3. Final Project = 40%

REMINDER: Unless indicated otherwise, all assignments are to be turned in through the assignments tab in Microsoft Teams.

Theory

IN THIS SECTION WE WILL LEARN IMPORTANT CONCEPTS NEEDED TO DO THE PRACTICE. PLEASE ENSURE YOU HAVE REVIEWED THE MATERIALS BELOW BEFORE TAKING THE QUIZ ASSIGNED THROUGH TEAMS.

What should you already know about Audio/Video?

In the Audio/Video module, we learned the following:

  • Different basic audio and video equipment

  • Different camera shots and moves

  • How to prepare an audio plan

  • Basic planning documents in film (storyboard, shots list)

  • Basic editing techniques in film (transitions, text, etc.)

It is important that you have a good understanding of each bullet listed above. Consider reviewing the Multimedia 10 - Audio/Visual presentation files. Some of the bullets will be readdressed in the following Presentation 1.

Practice

IN THIS SECTION YOU WILL APPLY WHAT YOU LEARNED IN THE THEORY SECTION. THE AIM OF PRACTICING IS TO EQUIP YOU WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NEEDED TO CHOOSE AND CREATE YOUR OWN FINAL PROJECT. CLICK ON THE BUTTON BELOW TO DOWNLOAD A PRACTICE PORTFOLIO TEMPLATE (MOVE IT TO YOUR STUDENT FOLDER) AND CAREFULLY REVIEW THE INSTRUCTIONS.

Include the following challenges, plus pictures of any other in-class activities you completed (earn bonus marks), inside your practice portfolio:

#1 – You’ve Been Framed:

For this challenge, it is recommended you work with a partner(s) to shoot each other as subjects; otherwise use an object (e.g., action figure) as the main subject. In your practice portfolio, add static photos demonstrating the following types of framing:

• Establishing Shot
• Single Shot
• Two Shot
• Over The Shoulder
• Insert Shot
• POV Shot

#2 – Sequence:

For this challenge, you will read the article linked below to learn about sequencing and continuity, then come up with your own sequence idea to film. Keep it short and sweet (e.g., taking the elevator, buying something from a vending machine, etc.). It is recommended you work with a partner(s) to shoot each other as subjects. In your practice portfolio, embed an exported video file (.mp4) demonstrating your sequence (continuity is key).

> Filmmaking Basics: The Sequence (Article)

#3 – Audio Recordings:

For this challenge, you will record the same sound using a minimum of three different recording devices (e.g., phone, DSLR camera mic, lavalier mic, USB mic, etc.). The devices do not need to simultaneously record the sound; however, keep the sound consistent each time you record with a different device. The goal of this challenge is to hear the differences in quality between each recording device.

In your practice portfolio, add a slide that includes both the exported recorded sounds (.mp3) and labels explaining which device was used.

#4 – Speed Ramping Reel:

For this challenge, you will follow the tutorial closely to produce a speed ramped reel of a subject of your choosing. You will need to shoot in 60 fps or higher and the highest resolution your camera affords. Keep your subject centered in your frame and collect 8-10 clips of the subject from different distances and angles.

Timing to music is optional but encouraged. You may request a gimble from the teacher but please download the DJI Mimo app in advance.

In your practice portfolio, add an exported .mp4 of your final production.

Final Project

IN THIS SECTION, YOU WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO CHOOSE AND DESIGN A PROJECT THAT RELATES TO WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED IN THIS CREDIT (SEE FINAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION BELOW). PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE INSTRUCTIONS AND FOLLOW THEM CAREFULLY. PLEASE SEE ME IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING TO COME UP WITH A PROJECT IDEA OR NEXT ADDITIONAL GUIDANCE.

Final Project Description: For this final project, you will plan, edit, and present a video production that is at least 3 minutes in duration.
